About
We believe the cable stayed structure provides an opportunity for an exciting landmark.
The solution is to provide cable-stayed bridges to provide for the pedestrian links required in the brief. The towers needed to hold up the cable stayed elements are sculpturally distinctive and we believe they would function well as memorable district landmarks, and provide an elegant, sculptural, minimalist, modern and structurally responsive solution. The bridge’s design stems from the idea for a ‘laundry peg’ which suggests a domestic connotation (appropriate for a residential area. The idea of a ‘peg’ is also very appropriate in suggesting a ‘connection’ or ‘tie’ to provide linkages, which is exactly what the pedestrian links represent both symbolically and functionally.

About
At the outset, we envisioned an iconic landmark for the TKO link, a bridge that would be visually striking and visible from the TKO bay. The scale and vantage point of the bridge tower from the TKO downtown area presents an opportunity for a sculpturally distinct response.
Particular attention has been paid to the structural response for the pylon holding up the ‘Cabled Stayed’ portion of the bridge. Inspired by the shape of archery bow or a harp in ‘stressed’ position, the shape takes on a contorted/leaning form, providing the structure needed to achieve the required span clearance over the channel. Its form, starts from the bottom as a split along the central section, rejoins at two-thirds up its height (at its thinnest point viewed from the side section, providing the needed mass to maintain structural integrity), briefly forming into a ‘single’ column, before splitting into two again at the top. The overall form plays on the ‘duality’ characteristic, which is also related to the configuration of the bridge into ‘two carriage way, and a pair of paths for bikes and pedestrian’. Metal cladding braces the sides of the tower, further emphasizing the pylon’s form as a ‘pairing’ of two towers, giving it a ‘metal reflective sheen’ to mark its presence at the bay.
The leaning pylon/tower combines structure and sculpture, and the end result is a visually striking response for the TKO waterfront. The bridge apart from serving as a connection link, will also serve as a landmark serving the opportunity for stop over visits in the middle section, reinforcing the importance of the bridge as a destination.
